BCES-BOE Negotiations Update
On Thursday, March 11, 2010, the negotiating teams representing the Blount County Board of Education and the Blount County Education Association, met to begin the process of addressing pressing budgetary issues.
The first item under discussion was approval of language that clarified the process educators will use when reporting for duty. Educators will still not be required to ‘clock-in’ or ‘clock-out’ by recording a time. Another item agreed upon was the addition of language that defined the teacher work year. This provision mirrors state minimum requirements. Both sides agreed on the changes and it will now be sent to the respective members of the Board of Education and the teachers for ratification.
Mr. Britt requested action on Article VII, D1, Retirement Incentive.
Both sides understand there are serious concerns regarding the budget. One of the possible items that would make an immediate impact on the budget is retirements. All in attendance acknowledge there may be an up-front cost but the impact on next year’s budget and in the following years could produce substantial savings. Many options were stated and the issue was clarified. A date was set for a future session.
The next session will be held on March 24, 2010, at the Central Office. Due the importance and urgency of this matter the session will begin at 8:30 a.m. and last until 3:30 p.m. It is open to anyone who wants to attend.
